progress with the sandstone footings

sunday, 27 june 2010 – spent a cold winter’s day up at the panelbox hut site, finally making progress with the preparation of the sandstone footings. The western, down-slope wall of the building will be supported on a line of three piers, each comprising a pair of blocks.

phil and I used a water-filled tube to determine the heights for each block – which determined how deep the various footing holes needed to be excavated…

once we were SURE the hole was the right depth and level, one of the 90kg blocks was manoeuvred into position and gravity fed into the hole – it’s not coming out again!

and we installed one of the last pieces of the composting loo puzzle – a beautifully shaped brass hood that phil made to both protect the air inlet, and to help warm the in-flowing air by thermal radiation – ie the metal heats up in the sun, creating a localised temperature differential… the final step is installation of the outlet chimney – very soon, I hope…
